Abstract
Abnormally high and low level of maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein(MSAFP) in the second trimester of pregnancy have been associated with various poor pregnancy outcomes such as neural tube defects and chromosomal
abnormalities.
A total of 659 patients participated in a maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein screening program in Inje University, Sanggye Paik Hospital between July 1, 1991 and December 31, 1992.
The authors determined the median value of MSAFP on each gestational week of midpregnancy and established the cutoff value using 0.4, 2.5, 3.5 multiples of the median(MOM) for the determinations of normal range in Korean mother.
In this study, MSAFP values higher than 3.5 multiples of the median(MOM) were associated with poor pregnancy ouctomes such as neural tube defects, abdominal wall defects, and cystic hygroma.
